KUNSTHALLE GIESSEN

Until June 2009, the Kunsthalle Giessen was housed in the convention hall on Berliner Platz 2 designed by Swedish architect Sven Markelius and built in 1966. Likewise until June 2009, it was the city’s largest municipal exhibition hall, spreading out over nearly three hundred square metres of floor space.

Changing exhibitions of the work of supra-regional artists were shown there, regularly interspersed with exhibitions organized by regional artists’ associations and insitutions. The art history department of the Justus Liebig Universität Giessen moreover carried out the project Kunstgeschichte und zeitgenössische Kunst (art history and contemporary art) in what is now the former Kunsthalle.

Giessen’s new Kunsthalle, a spacious exhibition facility with approximately four hundred square metres of gallery space, was established in May 2009 in the new town hall on Berliner Platz 1. It will feature a programme of supra-regional and international contemporary art. The art historian Dr. Ute Riese was appointed curator of the Kunsthalle Giessen on 15 July 2009.
