About 20,000 students have registered for approx. 150 courses available at the Justus-Liebig-University (JLU). There are eleven faculties and seven scientific centres providing an extremely broad range of subjects. The range extends from the classical sciences to law, economics, social and educational studies and then to languages and cultural studies. With its offer of medicine, veterinary medicine as well as agriculture, home-economics and nutritional sciences the JLU has a unique constellation of subjects.

The Transferzentrum Mittelhessen (Transfer Centre of central Hesse) provides an uncomplicated exchange between science and economy. It is run by the University of Giessen and the University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen together with the Philipps-University of Marburg. In the Interdisziplinären Forschungszentrum (IFZ)(Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Environmental Protection) at the JLU, which was founded in 2000, researchers from the fields of biology, agricultural and nutritional sciences are working on projects to maintain sustainable use of natural resources. Moreover, during the past few years a Zentrum für Medien und Interaktivität (ZMI) (Centre for Media and Interactivity) was founded, in which applied research on media related questions is performed in five sections. PhD students in the humanities at the University of Giessen can now take systematically devised courses at the Graduiertenzentrum Kulturwissenschaften (GGK) (Giessen Graduate School for Cultural Studies) which was founded two years ago and which is the first of its kind in Germany. A biomedical research centre with 12,000 m² space is in the pipeline at the moment and several institutes are going to be incorporated within it.

During the past few years the location of Giessen managed to create the basis for linking economy, universities and public services, made possible by the consistent co-operation of all those involved.
